David Z (born David Rivkin) is a music producer, engineer, mixer, and writer from Minneapolis, Minnesota who currently resides in Los Angeles, California. He is most well known for his long-standing work with Prince, but has also contributed to award winning albums by Etta James, Billy Idol, BoDeans, Buddy Guy, Cyril Neville and Neneh Cherry.
He produced, engineered and mixed many new artists first and groundbreaking records such as Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jesse Johnson, Jody Watley, Tinsley Ellis, Collective Soul, Big Head Todd and the Monsters…and the list goes on. He also produced the US #1 single “She Drives Me Crazy” by Fine Young Cannibals, creating the song’s signature snare drum sound. He was a member of Lipps Inc, with whom he had a US #1 and UK #2 hit with “Funkytown.”
Currently based in Los Angeles, CA, David Z has honed his craft through a wide variety of projects and genres, ranging from Storyville, Frank Black, Buddy Guy, Leo Kottke, Gov’t Mule, Angelique Kidjo, Beverly McClellan to his Grammy-winning work with Etta James. In addition, his interest in arranging and songwriting continues his co-writing experience early on with Gram Parsons, which everyone from Elvis Costello to Yo La Tengo has covered.
